Boating and Fishing on Charlotte Harbor

Charlotte Harbor is the second-largest open-water estuary in Florida, spanning roughly 270 square miles. Fed by the Peace and Myakka Rivers, it is a shallow, seagrass-rich body of water that connects to the Gulf of Mexico through Boca Grande Pass. For boaters and anglers living in Punta Gorda, it is essentially a backyard playground.

Getting Out on the Water

Boaters in Punta Gorda have several launch options. The Laishley Park Municipal Marina on Charlotte Harbor offers 85 slips and direct harbor access. Safe Harbor Burnt Store, a full-service marina north of the city, provides additional slip space and repair facilities. Several public boat ramps are scattered throughout the city and surrounding county.

From a canal-front home in Punta Gorda Isles, reaching open water takes minutes. The wide saltwater canals connect to Charlotte Harbor without any fixed bridges, making the run straightforward for sailboats and larger powerboats alike. Boca Grande Pass, the primary outlet to the Gulf, is roughly 15 nautical miles south by southwest.

Fishing Charlotte Harbor

The harbor supports over 450 species of fish, making it one of the most productive estuaries on Florida's Gulf Coast. The shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, and extensive seagrass beds create ideal habitat for inshore species.

Tarpon. The annual tarpon migration through Charlotte Harbor, typically from April through June, is the region's signature fishing event. Anglers wade the flats or cast from boats to sight-cast migrating fish, some exceeding 100 pounds. Boca Grande Pass is known as the "Tarpon Capital of the World."

Snook. Snook hold along the mangrove shorelines, dock structures, and bridge shadows throughout the harbor. They are a warm-weather species and provide strong action from spring through fall.

Redfish and trout. The harbor's grass flats and oyster bars hold redfish and spotted seatrout year-round. These are reliable catches for both novice and experienced anglers and are the backbone of the inshore fishery.

Offshore. From Boca Grande Pass, the offshore grounds offer grouper, snapper, kingfish, and cobia. The transition from the shallow estuary to deep Gulf water happens quickly, giving Punta Gorda-based boaters access to both inshore and offshore fishing without a long run.

Beyond Fishing

Charlotte Harbor is also a premier sailing destination. Sail Magazine named it one of the "Top Ten Greatest Places to Sail in the US," citing the consistent winds, protected waters, and scenic shorelines. The Charlotte Harbor Community Sailing Center and several local yacht clubs support an active sailing community.

Dolphin sightings are common from boats and kayaks. Manatees are frequently seen in the shallower areas near the Peace River. The harbor's seagrass beds and mangrove shorelines are part of a protected estuary system that supports sea turtles and a wide variety of wading birds.
